Thames : gateway to the Coromandel
Approximately 90 minutes after leaving Auckland in one of our campervan rentals, you will reach the historic town of Thames. This is the peninsula's main shopping precinct which has a historic main street and wide variety of shopping venues. Stop at the Thames Gold Mine for a guided tour or visit the war memorial for a fabulous view of this picturesque town. If you are passing through on a Saturday why not stop at the markets?
Coromandel Town : artistic community
This laid back town is full of character and charm, with restored heritage architecture dating back to the pioneering days of the timber and gold industry. The town has an interesting mix of shops and restaurants. There are also a number of artists' studios which are open to members of the public.
Whitianga & Mercury Bay : east coast
Mercury Bay has a spectacular coastline that is relatively sheltered and ideal for a wide range of water sports. The famed Hot Water Beach is located here where visitors can dig in the sand to soak in the warm mineral rich waters. Cathedral Cove is also a must-see stretch of coastline that is only accessibly on foot or by boat. Fortunately there are a variety of great campgrounds in the area which welcome campervan rental travellers. These campgrounds make an ideal base camp for further exploration of this spectacularly beautiful region.
Tairua & Pauanui : east coast
These twin harbour towns are an outstanding seaside holiday destination. The towns both cater to the tourist trade with a wide variety of fishing charters, beaches, water sports and resort accommodation. This part of the peninsula is famous for the stunningly beautiful combination of beach and rainforest. The surf breaks are outstanding and it is also a fantastic place to go swimming. Waihi & Waihi Beach : centre of gold
This is one of New Zealand's most famous gold mining towns which is still in production to this day. The town itself is full of character with old wooden buildings, white sandy beaches and a rustic laid back lifestyle with no shopping centres in sight. This is truly the best destination for those whose who enjoy the simple life.
